Things appear to be going amiss at the University of Education, Winneba, as its chapter of the University University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) have declared Professor Mawutor Avoke as the new Vice-Chancellor of the University.
In a letter signed by the President of UEW UTAG, Dr. Frimpong Kaakyire Duku, they mentioned that their decision to reinstate Prof. Avoke is in consonance with the 1992 constitution of Ghana as well as the school’s Act and Statues.
Consequently, with effect from today, 23rd July, 2019 and in consonance with the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, the University of Education, Winneba Act and the Statues of the University, Professor Mawutor Avoke resumes office as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, to perform his lawfully mandated functions as so required
UEW UTAG set their decision on the premise that Prof. Avoke, who was sacked for alleged breaches of office and malfeasance of a financial nature was exonerated by the Economic and Organized Crime Organization.
They insist that the ousted Vice-Chancellor is the legitimate head of the university and wants Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni to vacate the office and allow him to work.
“After a thorough investigation by EOCO, the state instution mandated in and by law, to investigate such matters, Prof. Mawutor Avoke and the others have been proven innocent and duly cleared of said charges for which they were wrongfully dismissed as Vice-Chancellor and officers and as such staff of the University, the statement said.

Earlier on Tuesday, it came to light that the Chairman of the Senior Staff Association Union of the University, Kingsley Amoakwah, has sued the school and its Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni.
Kingsley Amoakwah is seeking an order restraining Afful-Broni from “holding himself out as the Vice-Chancellor or performing any such functions in that capacity at UEW.”
He is also seeking an order “restraining Afful-Broni from continuously interfering in the administration of Professor Mawutor Avoke, the legitimate Vice-Chancellor of UEW.”
Media reports on Tuesday also suggest that Prof. Avoke and his team stormed the University campus to organize a press conference on the school’s campus.
He was however prevented by the police by going ahead with his intention.
