President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Education Minister and GES to analyse the Chief Examiner’s report on the 2025 WASSCE results following widespread failure in key subjects, calling for urgent reforms to address the root causes.

President Mahama Demands Urgent Probe into 2025 WASSCE Results

President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the Minister of Education and the leadership of Ghana Education Service (GES) to undertake a full analysis of the 2025 examiners’ report, in light of a dramatic drop in performance in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The President described the results as “mind-boggling,” expressing serious concern that despite having the same teachers and instructional conditions, one year’s batch performed markedly worse than previous years.

Neglect of Foundational Education Blamed for Weak Outcomes

At the launch of the nationwide STEM Box initiative for basic schools, President Mahama argued that the root of the problem lies in long-standing neglect of foundational education in Ghana. He cited chronic delays in capitation grants and recurrent shortages of qualified teachers at the basic level as key factors contributing to poor foundational learning. According to him, many students progressed through the system without mastering basic skills in reading, writing, and arithmetic — essentials for success in senior high school and beyond.

Focus on Actionable Reform Following the Report

By ordering a study of the Chief Examiner’s report, Mr Mahama signaled commitment to evidence-based reforms rather than quick fixes. The directive aims to identify and understand systemic weaknesses — including curriculum gaps, teaching quality, resource allocation, and examination preparedness — that may have contributed to the meltdown in performance. He emphasized that strict invigilation alone will not resolve the problem. Instead, the focus must shift to improving foundational teaching, guaranteeing resources, providing teacher training, and ensuring quality delivery at the basic level.

Call for Collective Action from Government, Schools, Parents

The President’s move underscores a call for collective responsibility. Government agencies, school administrators, teachers, parents, and education stakeholders are being urged to support reforms that shore up early education, reinforce best teaching practices, and restore public confidence in national examinations.Through this exercise, authorities hope to restore the academic integrity of WASSCE, safeguard students’ future opportunities, and strengthen the overall quality of Ghana’s education system.
