JUST IN: Minority stages a Walk-Out over ‘illegal’ Passing of Pre-Tertiary Education Bill in Parliament

Ghana’s minority in Parliament has staged a walk-out over what they described as an illegal passing of the Pee- Tertiary Education Bill without the input of stakeholders.

The decision by the minority to stage a walk-out is inline with an earlier decision by a committee of Parliament to allow Teacher Unions and other stakeholders make an input into the bill before it is being passed into law.

Earlier, EducationGhana reported of a decision by the government to pass the bill during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Earlier Discussions

Teacher Unions at the Pre-Tertiary Education Level have called on the Chairman of the  Parliamentary Select Committee on Education to inform the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana to suspend any further deliberation on the Pre – Tertiary Education Bill.

The Unions, which include the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) , Teachers and Educational Workers of Ghana (TEWU) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT), have, thus, called on parliament to suspend further deliberations on the education bill.

The Unions made this revelation in a response to an invitation by the Ghana Education Service to the Unions to an offsite meeting on the Pre-Tertiary Education Bill currently before the Parliament of Ghana for Consideration.

The purpose of the meeting is to offer the Unions the opportunity to make relevant inputs into the Bill.
