GRASAG-KNUST has announced that PhD and MPhil students graduating in March 2026 must undertake an oral examination, while MSc students receive a one-time exemption.


The Executive Committee of the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (GRASAG-KNUST), has officially announced an update on the oral examination requirements for postgraduate students scheduled to graduate at the March 2026 Special Congregation.

 

According to the notice issued on 26 January 2026, PhD and MPhil candidates due for the Special Congregation will be required to undertake an Oral Examination of Thesis as part of the mandatory graduation requirements.

MSc Students Granted Special Dispensation

In a notable development, MSc students scheduled for the March 2026 Special Congregation have been granted a special dispensation and will not be required to undertake the oral examination.

 

GRASAG-KNUST explained that this decision was reached after a series of engagements with the School of Graduate Studies and other relevant authorities of the University. The exemption applies strictly to MSc students graduating at the March 2026 Special Congregation.

Oral Examination Remains Mandatory Going Forward

The Association clarified that the oral examination policy remains intact for all postgraduate programmes beyond the March 2026 Special Congregation.

 

From the end of the current academic year onwards, all postgraduate students, including those pursuing PhD, MPhil, and MSc programmes, will be required to undergo an oral examination of their thesis as a compulsory graduation requirement.

 

This clarification is aimed at preventing misinterpretation of the special dispensation and ensuring that students plan adequately for future graduation timelines.

GRASAG-KNUST Calls for Cooperation

The notice, signed by the GRASAG-KNUST President, Yussif Suleman, called on postgraduate students to cooperate fully with the implementation of the directive and to seek clarification where necessary through the appropriate academic channels.

 

The update forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen postgraduate academic standards and align thesis assessment processes with best practices in graduate education.
