“In a surprising turn of events, Ghana’s education sector faces upheaval as teaching staff salaries are withheld amidst an ongoing CETAG strike. Discover the implications and debates surrounding this bold government directive.”

Accra, Ghana. In a surprising turn of events, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a bold directive, commanding the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) to withhold the August salaries of teaching staff across all 46 Public Colleges of Education in Ghana.

The move, backed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has escalated tensions amidst an ongoing strike by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG).

The directive, which comes into effect on August 21, 2023, has sent shockwaves through the education sector. According to the instructions, while August salaries are put on hold, any outstanding arrears leading up to August 2023 are to be meticulously validated and disbursed as per standard procedures.

This strategic manoeuvre by the government aims to exercise fiscal prudence while also addressing the grievances of educators.

The letter conveying the directive was penned by Saaka Sayuti, the Director General of Administration for GTEC. The decision to halt salaries coincides with an ongoing strike action initiated by CETAG on August 1, 2023.

The educators went on strike expressing their frustration over the government’s perceived apathy towards their long-standing requests and concerns.

The situation has ignited a fervent debate within the education community, with emotions running high.

While the government asserts its commitment to streamlining financial matters and enhancing accountability, educators and their supporters see this move as a potential setback to the educational system’s stability.

As negotiations continue to unfold, the education landscape remains in flux. The juxtaposition of halted salaries and impassioned strikes has thrust the matter into the national spotlight, forcing stakeholders to reckon with the critical role of educators in shaping the country’s future.

How this standoff resolves will undoubtedly shape the trajectory of Ghana’s education sector for years to come.
