The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Education, plans to rename C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences and several other public universities as part of a broader review of institutions established under former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The Government of Ghana is set to introduce a bill in Parliament to rename the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS), alongside other public tertiary institutions established or renamed under former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during the swearing-in of the Governing Council of CKT-UTAS in Accra.

CKT-UTAS, established in 2021, was envisioned as a hub for technical and applied science education to prepare Ghanaian students for global competitiveness. However, the university has grappled with infrastructure deficits that have impeded its academic growth.

According to Minister Iddrisu, broad consultations were held with stakeholders including traditional authorities, academia, students, and civil society. “The name C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences is likely to change—possibly reverting to the original vision,” he said.

Renaming Part of Wider Legislative Effort

The Minister revealed that the renaming of CKT-UTAS is part of a broader legislative initiative that would review the names of multiple public universities. He clarified that the move is not an attempt to erase legacies, but rather to ensure institutional names reflect their historical roots and founding visions.

“This is not to say those individuals do not deserve recognition,” Iddrisu explained. “But the renaming will aim to reflect the foundational ethos and historical identities of the institutions.”

Among the institutions mentioned as potentially affected are the University of Mines and Technology and the Abdulai Salifu University.

Next Steps

The renaming bill is expected to be laid before Parliament in the coming weeks. The process will likely involve further debate and engagement with relevant stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition.
