Ghanaian mathematician Angela Tabiri has been named “World’s Most Interesting Mathematician” by The Big Internet Math-Off. Recognized for her innovative approach and commitment to promoting diversity in STEM, Tabiri’s achievement inspires future generations in mathematics.
Angela Tabiri, a young Ghanaian mathematician, has been awarded the prestigious title of “World’s Most Interesting Mathematician” in a recent global competition. Her remarkable achievements and contributions to the field of mathematics have set a new benchmark and are expected to inspire a new generation of math enthusiasts.
The contest, organized by The Big Internet Math-Off, began on July 1 and concluded on July 24, 2024, in the United States. Tabiri, affectionately known as the “Maths Queen,” emerged victorious among 16 global contenders, including esteemed lecturers, researchers, writers, and business professionals. The competition aimed to highlight how engaging and relevant mathematics can be.

Angela Tabiri hails from Accra and has been recognized for her innovative approach to solving complex mathematical problems. Her journey into the realm of mathematics started early, driven by a passion for numbers and problem-solving. Despite facing challenges and stereotypes as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field, Tabiri’s determination and resilience have propelled her to success.
Tabiri’s academic journey includes graduating from the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Ghana in 2014, pursuing a postgraduate diploma at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), and earning a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Glasgow in 2019. She currently serves as a Research Associate specializing in Quantum Algebra and as the Academic Manager for the Girls in Mathematical Sciences Program (GMSP) at AIMS Ghana.
In addition to her academic work, Tabiri is the founder of Femafricmaths, a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting female African mathematicians. She actively engages in outreach activities such as Science in Tents, National STEAM Day, and Y3p3maths, aiming to inspire high school students in Ghana. Tabiri’s commitment to mentoring and diversity is further demonstrated by her selection for the 2024 Female Science Talents Intensive Track Program by the Falling Walls Foundation.
