The Ghana Education Service (GES) has approved the introduction of Tug of War, Pillow Fights and Tetherball as sporting activities in basic and second-cycle schools.

The approval comes after the Federation of Tug of War/Pillow Fight and Ghana Tetherball Federation petitioned the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Eric Nkansah to introduce the three (3) sports at the Pre-Tertiary Education level.

GES following the sports endorsement has directed the two Federations to liaise with the PE & Sports Unit to enable them to plan and organize how to roll out the programmes and activities for the introduction of the three sports.

The sports activities according to the Ghana Education Service (GES) are expected to nurture young talents and encourage them to participate in our District and Schools without disrupting the teaching and learning periods.

“Regional Directors are requested to inform Metro, Municipal and District Directors and Heads of Second cycle Institutions that approval has been granted for the introduction of Tug of War, Pillow Fight and Tetherball in our schools,” it said.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) in the letter added that “Management expects that the Federations will strictly adhere to the directives to ensure smooth and continuous running of the sports in our schools.”

Tug of war

Tug of war is a sport that pits two teams against each other in a test of strength: teams pull on opposite ends of a rope, with the goal being to bring the rope a certain distance in one direction against the force of the opposing team’s pull.

Pillow fight,

Pillow fight, on the other hand, is a common game mostly played by young children in which they engage in mock physical conflict, using pillows as weapons. The purpose of the game is to hit the other player with the pillow while avoiding getting hit.

Tetherball

Tetherball is a game where two players use their hands to strike a volleyball which is suspended from a stationary metal pole by a rope or tether.
