GES Director-General Conducts Surprise School Inspections in Ashanti, Assures Action on Staffing Concerns

GES Director-General Prof. Kofi Davis undertakes unannounced visits to schools in the Ashanti Region, confirming improved feeding conditions while addressing concerns over inadequate kitchen staff.

The Director-General of the , , has carried out a surprise working visit to selected schools in the as part of ongoing efforts to monitor conditions in public basic and secondary institutions.

The unannounced inspections, conducted on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, form part of a broader leadership approach aimed at strengthening accountability and improving service delivery across the education sector.

Direct Engagement with Schools

During the visit, Prof. Davis and his management team interacted closely with both teaching and non-teaching staff, observing school operations at first hand. The exercise provided an opportunity to assess real-time classroom practices, evaluate administrative efficiency, and identify immediate challenges affecting school performance.

The team also inspected food storage facilities and engaged kitchen staff to better understand feeding arrangements under the government’s school feeding and Free SHS programmes.

Improved Feeding Conditions Recorded

Findings from the inspections indicated that most schools visited currently have adequate food supplies. Observations further showed noticeable improvements in the quality of meals and general feeding conditions compared to previous assessments.

These developments reflect ongoing efforts by the and its partners to stabilise food supply systems and enhance student welfare across public schools.

Staffing Challenges Highlighted

Despite the positive progress, concerns were raised regarding the limited number of kitchen staff in some schools. Administrators and support staff indicated that the workload on existing personnel remains high, which could affect efficiency over time.

School authorities therefore appealed for the recruitment of additional kitchen staff to support feeding operations.

Assurance from GES Leadership

Responding to the concerns, Prof. Davis acknowledged the staffing gaps and assured stakeholders that the issue would receive careful attention. He emphasised the Service’s commitment to addressing operational challenges that affect both staff welfare and student well-being.

The Director-General reiterated that such field visits will continue as part of efforts to maintain high standards and ensure that policies are effectively implemented at the school level.

Strengthening Accountability Through Monitoring

The GES leadership has increasingly relied on unannounced inspections as a practical tool for monitoring performance and enforcing standards across the country’s education system. These visits allow management to gather firsthand information and respond promptly to emerging issues.

Education stakeholders have welcomed the approach, noting that it promotes transparency, strengthens supervision, and enhances the overall quality of teaching and learning.
