KNUST mourns the tragic loss of Deedi, a final-year student killed in a road accident captured on CCTV. Incident sparks road safety concerns in Kumasi.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) community is in deep mourning following the tragic death of a final-year student, Deedi, from the Geography and Rural Development Department.

The heartbreaking incident occurred in Kumasi, around the Santasi area, where Deedi was struck by a “trotro” (public transport minibus) while waiting by the roadside. CCTV footage from a nearby eatery captured the horrifying moment, revealing the circumstances leading to her untimely death.

Narrow Escape for Bystanders

The footage also shows two other males who narrowly escaped being hit by the same vehicle just moments before the fatal accident. This has raised concerns about road safety and the recklessness of some drivers on Ghanaian roads.

Community in Shock

The news of Deedi’s passing has sent shockwaves through the university’s student body and faculty. Many have taken to social media, particularly X (formerly Twitter), to express their grief and share memories of Deedi, whose image has since gone viral.

Calls for Action

The tragic event has reignited discussions on road safety, with many highlighting the lack of seat belts, overcrowding, and negligence often associated with trotros. Students and staff at KNUST are urging authorities to enforce stricter regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Ongoing Investigation

Local authorities are reportedly investigating the incident to determine the exact cause and hold the driver accountable. Meanwhile, the KNUST community continues to grieve the loss of one of their own.
