The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has produced alcohol-based sanitizers in the wake of the rising cost of the product in Ghana following the confirmation of coronavirus cases.

Currently, hand sanitizers are being sold at exorbitant prices at various business hubs due to the high demand on the market.

The use of hand sanitizers is among the precautionary measures outlined by authorities to help protect oneself from contracting the disease.

The Pharmaclean Hand Sanitizer, produced by KNUST, comeS in varied volumes.

According to KNUST’s University Relations Officer, Dr. Norris Bekoe, the sanitizers are yet to be distributed to the open market but are available for bulk orders by wholesalers.

The unit cost of the product is to be between GHS 15 – GHS 25, depending on volume or size,” he stated.

The KNUST-produced sanitizers have an alcohol content of 70% which meets the recommended alcohol content by health experts for the fight against the spread of the convid-19 pandemic.

It has been formulated to clean without water helping to keep the hands soft and smooth.

Dr. Daniel Norris believes the KNUST manufactured hand sanitizer has come at a time when the president of Ghana has called on pharmaceutical companies to produce alcohol-based hand sanitizers following the outbreak of the novel Covid-19 virus.

The release of the product is expected to address the issue of shortage and reduce the abnormal cost of sanitizers in shops across the country.

The faculty has currently produced over 1,000 of the sanitizers.
