Accra College of Edu. admits 354 Students out of 3,152 applicants due to Limited infrastructure

Accra College of Education has admitted only 354 out of some 3,152 applicants that applied to pursue various courses in the College to obtain their Degrees.

The decision to admit only 354 students has been due to infrastructural Challenges being faced by the College in recent times.

The Principal of the College, Dr Samuel Awikene Atintono said during the 2nd matriculation ceremony of the College on Thursday, December 5, 2019, that Infrastructural Problems have been the biggest problem with a majority of the Colleges of Education in Ghana.

Statistics

According to the Principal, the College admitted 354 Students out of a total of 990 qualified applicants from 3,152 applicants who showed interest in the College.

Out of the total applicants of 3,152,   1,213 applicants opted for First Choice of which 990 qualified for admission.

For the Second Choice, 038 applied with 1000 applicants opting for Third Choice.

Out of the 354 admitted students,202 are males  while 152 are females

Female Admissions

In his address, the Principal of the College said the College deliberately increased female admissions by 20% in order to meet the College’s gender parity policy target of 50:50.

“We have over the years attained 72:28 but this year we achieved 58:42 and are on course to meeting our target,” He said.

Academic Programmes

The Principal indicated that the College has two main Academic Programmes of the four -year Bachelor of Education Programme.

They are the Primary and Junior High options.. He indicated that 160 students opted for the Primary Programme while 190 opted for the Junior High School programme.

Affiliation

Accra College of Education is one of the Six Colleges of Education affiliated to the University of Ghana.

Dr Atintono indicated, the College signed and affiliation agreement with the University of Ghana in October 2019.

According to the affiliation agreement, the University of will provide oversight academic mentorship to the College to ensure that the College adheres to the quality standards in the preparation of the teacher trainees based on the National Teacher Education Curriculum Framework(NTECF) and the National Teaching Standards (NTS).Accra College of Edu. admits 354 Students out of 3,152 applicants due to Limited infrastructure | 2

Academic Performance

Referencing the performance of students in the last academic year, the Principal said some seventeen students at the end of the first year could not progress to the second year as a result of poor academic performance.

He further indicated the sad moment when such students had to be withdrawn from the College.

He urged the matriculants to take their studies seriously to avoid the former.

Supported Teaching in Schools (STS)

Dr  Samuel Atintono further elaborated that the new 4-year Bachelor Degree Programme was quite different from the Diploma in Basic Education Programme.

He said the Degree programme was associated with Supported Teaching in Schools (STS) formally known as Teaching Practice which now starts from year one through to the fourth year with different levels of emphasis.

The STS is said to have constituted 30% of the entire training ofg the students in the College.

Provision of PA Systems

Speaking to pressmen after the ceremony, the Principal of the College, Dr Samuel Awikene Atintono indicated that the College realized the need to expand technology after an increment in the admission number and the number of students in the lecture halls.

He noted that the College was in the process of installing Public Address Systems in the Lecture halls.

Appreciation

In his concluding speech, the Principal thanked the government for his concinnous support for Colleges of Education in the Country.

He acknowledged that for the first time, the academic staff of the College received their book and research allowances for the 2019/20 academic year.
