Ferdinand | EducationGhana | December 20 | WAEC to Release 2024 WASSCE Results for Private Candidates Amid Government’s Inability to Pay Outstanding Debt
WAEC to release 2024 WASSCE results for private candidates despite government’s GH₵118 million debt. Learn more about the challenges and expected timelines.
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is set to release the results of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates despite the Ghanaian government’s inability to settle an outstanding debt of GH₵118 million.
In a statement by WAEC’s Director of Public Affairs, John Kapi, the organization confirmed that marking of scripts for both the theory and practical components of the exams has been completed. However, delays in processing the objective section remain a concern due to financial constraints.
“The government’s failure to settle its debt has affected the final stages of processing the results. However, WAEC is making arrangements to release the private candidates’ results while awaiting government intervention,” said Mr. Kapi.
Government’s Debt Crisis Impacting WAEC
WAEC revealed that the government’s outstanding debt has placed immense strain on its operations. Although the government made partial payments earlier to facilitate the 2024 WASSCE for school candidates, the remaining debt has hindered the final stages of results processing.
“We aimed to release the results earlier, but financial and logistical challenges have caused delays. We remain committed to delivering results to private candidates as planned,” Mr. Kapi explained.
Hope for Public School Candidates’ Results
For public school candidates, WAEC has indicated that the results may be released by the end of the year if the government fulfills its financial obligations. Dr. Eric Nkansah, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), earlier expressed optimism about the release of results but acknowledged the challenges WAE C is facing.
“We are confident the results will be released, possibly before the year ends,” Dr. Nkansah stated in an interview.
Key Implications
Private Candidates: Results are expected to be available soon despite financial hurdles.
School Candidates: Delays in processing their results may continue if the government fails to address the debt.
Future Concerns: WAEC and education stakeholders stress the importance of timely payments to avoid recurring challenges in subsequent examinations.
