What is WASSCE for Private Candidates or NOV/DEC?

The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Private Candidates, commonly known as NOV/DEC, is an examination conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for individuals who are not enrolled in regular secondary schools or who may wish to retake their WASSCE exams to improve their scores. Held annually between November and December, this exam provides an alternative to the traditional WASSCE taken by final-year senior high school students in May/June.

Key features of WASSCE for Private Candidates (NOV/DEC)

  1. Eligibility: It is open to anyone who has completed secondary education and wants to qualify for university or improve their previous WASSCE scores.
  2. Subjects Offered: Private candidates can choose from various subjects, including core subjects like English, Mathematics, and Science, along with electives in the arts, sciences, business, and technical fields.
  3. Exam Structure: Like the standard WASSCE, the NOV/DEC version includes multiple-choice questions, essay questions, and practicals (for applicable subjects).
  4. Certificate: Successful candidates receive a WASSCE certificate, which is recognized for university admissions and employment in West Africa and other regions.

This exam is particularly popular among candidates who did not meet their desired scores in previous WASSCE sittings or those who wish to complete their secondary education qualifications independently.
