Ferdinand | EducationGhana | December 26| WAEC Accelerates Scanning and Marking of 2024 WASSCE Objective Answer Sheets Amid Tight Deadlines
“WAEC accelerates the scanning and marking of 2024 WASSCE objective answer sheets after repairing key machines. With 50% completed, results are expected soon, though financial hurdles persist.”
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the commencement of scanning objective answer sheets for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, following the government’s release of GH₵25 million.
Mr. John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, shared updates during an interview with Joy FM, highlighting that the repair of malfunctioning scanning machines has enabled the council to resume this critical process.
Machines Restored, Work Resumes
After a technical setback, WAEC technicians have successfully repaired three essential scanning machines. However, some machines remain partially functional, necessitating cautious operation.
“Some of the machines are not fully operational, but we’ve managed to tweak a few of them. Work will start tonight with the scanning of the objective answer cards, running slowly to avoid further breakdowns,” Kapi disclosed.
In light of the urgency, WAEC has recalled personnel from their holiday breaks to assist in accelerating the scanning process.
Tackling Malpractice and Financial Constraints
Beyond scanning, WAEC examiners are scrutinizing scripts flagged for potential malpractice. The council is committed to ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the results, even as it grapples with financial challenges.
While the government has provided initial funds, WAEC stresses the need for additional financial support to repair more machines, compensate invigilators and supervisors, and upgrade bandwidth for uploading results.
“We’ve received assurances from the government that more funds will be released soon. However, delays in funding could impact the release timeline,” Kapi cautioned.
50% of Objective Answer Sheets Completed
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister for Education, provided a progress update, revealing that approximately 50% of the objective answer sheets have been marked.
He praised WAEC for working through the holidays to meet the provisional release date.
Speaking at a press briefing, Dr. Adutwum stated, “Currently, close to 50% of the objectives have been marked. WAEC is working tirelessly to ensure the results are ready on or before December 29, 2024.”
