Ferdinand | EducationGhana | July 06 | Upcoming Green Ghana Initiatives in Colleges of Education – 2025 Forecast
Stay informed on upcoming Green Ghana initiatives in Ghana’s Colleges of Education, covering e-waste recycling curriculum, expanded tree-planting, environmental clubs, and sustainable partnerships for 2025.
Ghana’s Green Ghana Initiative, which aims to plant 5 million trees annually and promote sustainable practices, continues to evolve within the Colleges of Education. Building on tree-planting successes, several new projects introduce e-waste management, climate education, green entrepreneurship, and strategic partnerships with NGOs and government agencies.
Here’s a full breakdown of what’s coming up in 2025:
E‑Waste Recycling Curriculum Pilots
In May 2025, the Ministry of Environment, Science, and Technology launched pilots to integrate e-waste recycling into tertiary education curriculums—targeting technical universities first. This program:
Includes short courses for informal recyclers.
Is supported by German funding (KfW) and the Mountain Research Institute.
Aims to equip students with practical skills to formalize recycling operations and reduce hazardous burning.
Coming soon to Colleges of Education: courses on environmental sanitation and ICT-based e‑waste processes, which could complement courses like SBA environmental tracking and lesson plans around sustainability.
Expansion of Tree-Planting Efforts
Colleges will host annual Green Ghana Days throughout 2025:
Komenda CoE will continue its “One Student, One Tree” campaign—expanding acreage for fruit and oil palms, generating income for college and community benefit.
UEW’s DASEES is expected to plant 1,000+ seedlings in 2025, continuing its stewardship in practice schools.
These efforts support environmental teaching and provide real-world sites for student practice.
Climate & Green Economy Curriculum Integration
As part of a nationwide push, the Ghana Education Service (GES) is embedding climate change and green economy themes in education programs, including universities and Colleges of Education. In June 2024, GES encouraged formation of environmental clubs and sustainability projects in pre-tertiary and tertiary institutions.
Upcoming initiatives may include:
Student-led climate clubs to implement campaigns and tree stewardship.
Teacher training modules in green economic principles.
ESD activities linked with Lesson Observation and SBA record systems, reinforcing green pedagogy.
Partnerships & Green Entrepreneurship
Takoradi Technical University (TTU) is piloting green entrepreneurship and incubation under the EU–Ghana Pact for Skills, equipping students in green-tech sectors. This model may be adapted to Colleges of Education to train future teachers in eco-ventures.
The fund-supported launch by organizations like Eco Warriors Movement and Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) are expected to establish more campus eco-clubs, promoting plastic waste campaigns and green leadership.
Evolving Focus in Teacher Training
A new revision of the Colleges of Education Act (2025) is scheduled to grant Colleges full legal status as degree-granting bodies.
This expansion encourages inclusive and sustainable education, integrating environmental literacy and research into degree programs.
Moreover, GES is aligning teacher training with global standards, including enhanced environmental education, digital tools, and inclusive approaches.
