University of Ghana Vice-Chancellor announces ‘One student One laptop’ policy

The newly inducted Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has hinted at plans to provide students and staff of the university with laptops.

She has dubbed this the “one student one laptop policy.”

Speaking at her swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, Prof. Appiah Amfo said that university authorities will “collaborate with established IT companies to provide our students and staff with their own laptop/handheld devices”

In view of that, she appealed to President Akufo-Addo to waive taxes, thereby making “these devices affordable for our students and staff.”

“The need for them to acquire their own laptops/handheld devices is critical in a period where we are upscaling technology to make us functional in the fourth revolution as we live through and beyond a health pandemic,” she explained.

In a bid to increase access to education, Prof. Appiah Amfo mentioned that the University will be establishing two more City campuses.

These campuses will be in Kumasi and Takoradi.

“As part of a double-pronged approach to make our education more accessible to the teeming high school graduates from all over the country, and to upscale graduate education on our main campus, I am supervising the establishment of two City Campuses, already approved by Council. I will monitor their operations and replicate the model in other Learning Centres across the country,” she said.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo, who was present at Tuesday’s induction ceremony at the University of Ghana has pledged support to Prof. Appiah Amfo.

Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo’s induction completes a quartet of an all-female leadership of the university.

For the first time in the University of Ghana’s 73-year history, its Chancellor, Council Chair, Vice-Chancellor, and Registrar are all female.

Prior to her appointment, she was the Pro-Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic and Students Affairs.

She previously also served as the Dean of the School of Languages at the University.
