Ferdinand | EducationGhana | April 17| Thobile Ngcamphalala Makes History at Rhodes University as Second Black South African Woman to Earn Master’s in Topology with Distinction
Thobile Ngcamphalala becomes the second Black South African female student in Rhodes University’s 120‑year history to graduate with a Master’s in Topology with Distinction. Her journey from the extended curriculum to published researcher marks a milestone in mathematical excellence.
Grahamstown, South Africa – April 2025 – In a landmark achievement at #RUGrad2025, Thobile Ngcamphalala has become only the second Black South African woman in Rhodes University’s 120‑year history to graduate with a Master’s degree in Topology with distinction.
Ngcamphalala’s academic journey began in the university’s extended curriculum programme, designed to give students who need more time the foundation to succeed. Leveraging this support, she first earned a BSc (Hons) in Pure Mathematics with Distinction, then completed her Master’s in just one year, defying the challenges often faced by students in extended pathways.
Her Master’s research, published in the DHET-accredited journal Applied General Topology where she is the first author—addresses complex problems in topological structures. This publication further underscores her pioneering role in a field where Black South African women remain underrepresented.
“Thobile’s story is one of perseverance, courage, and brilliance,” said Dr. Mbekezeli Nxumalo, her Master’s supervisor. “She set her own pace and broke new ground. It was a privilege to walk beside her through this journey.”
Looking ahead, Ngcamphalala plans to register for a PhD in Pure Mathematics later this year, aiming to continue her research and mentorship of future mathematicians from diverse backgrounds.
From navigating the extended curriculum to becoming an unforgettable figure in Rhodes University’s academic legacy, Thobile Ngcamphalala’s success stands as an inspiration—and a call to action for greater inclusion in the mathematical sciences.
Thobile, you didn’t just graduate—you made history!
