Born in 1969, Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann is a renowned biomedical engineer, a senior lecturer, and the founding head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Ghana, Legon.

Her journey in academia began at Aburi Girls’ Senior High School, where she studied General Science. In 1988, she secured a scholarship to pursue an International Baccalaureate Diploma at the United World College of the Atlantic in Wales.

Prof. Kaufmann continued her studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) and a Master of Science in Engineering (MSc.E).

Her passion for academia led her to return to Ghana, where she became the first woman to head the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Ghana. She held this position from 2006 to 2012 and again from 2014 to 2016.

Her roles at the University of Ghana extend beyond teaching. Prof. Kaufmann has been involved in establishing the Faculty of Engineering Sciences and served on the university’s Planning and Implementation Committees. She has also represented non-professorial academic staff on the University Council for four years.
