Police in Ghana’s Western North Region have arrested a school matron and cook over the alleged theft of students’ food items at Sefwi Bekwai STEM Senior High School, with large quantities of food retrieved during a search.

Police Arrest School Staff in Western North Region

The Western North Regional Police Command has arrested two staff members of Sefwi Bekwai STEM Senior High School at Awaso for their alleged involvement in the conspiracy and theft of food items meant for students.The suspects have been identified as Bennedicta Nyamadi, a matron, and Rahel Kyeremateng, a cook at the school.

Arrests Follow Intelligence Tip-Off

According to police sources, the arrests were made on 23 December 2025 following intelligence received by the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Chief Executive on the night of 22 December 2025.Acting on the information, a joint team made up of officers from the Ghana Police Service, the Member of Parliament for the area, and the Municipal Chief Executive proceeded to the residence of suspect Rahel Kyeremateng at Sefwi Atronsu.

Food Items Retrieved During Search

A search conducted at the premises led to the retrieval of large quantities of food items suspected to have been stolen from the school’s food store.Items retrieved included twenty one 50 kilogramme bags of rice, four sacks of gari, two sacks of maize, one and a half bags of millet, one bag of sugar, three bags of beans, forty large tins of tomato paste, four cartons of milk, six gallons of cooking oil, and fifty four tins of canned mackerel.The total value of the retrieved food items is yet to be determined by investigators.

Suspects Allegedly Planned to Sell Stolen Food

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects conspired to steal the food items and stored them at the residence of suspect Rahel Kyeremateng with the intention of selling them at a later date.During interrogation, Rahel Kyeremateng allegedly identified Bennedicta Nyamadi as the source of the food items. This information led to the subsequent arrest of Bennedicta Nyamadi at the school premises.

Police Hunt for Third Suspect

Meanwhile, police say efforts are underway to locate and arrest an assistant matron, identified as Hannah Dufie, who is reported to have participated in the alleged crime but is currently on the run.The Western North Regional Police Command has assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that all persons found culpable will be processed in accordance with the law.

Growing Concerns Over School Feeding Management

The incident has raised fresh concerns about the management of food supplies in boarding schools across Ghana. Stakeholders continue to call for stronger oversight mechanisms to protect student welfare and ensure accountability in public educational institutions.
