Auditorium 900 – October 20, 2024 – St James Seminary SHS has clinched a spot in the Quarter-final Stage of the 2024 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) after delivering an impressive performance against Tsito SHTS and Armed Forces SHTS. The contest ended with St James securing 50 points, while Tsito SHTS and Armed Forces SHTS managed 32 and 38 points, respectively.

The atmosphere in the auditorium was charged with anticipation as the seeded St James Seminary SHS aimed to maintain their place as favorites. The contestants showed confidence and determination, with the school affirming, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a step.” Their challengers, Tsito SHTS and Armed Forces SHTS, also expressed their readiness to give their best in pursuit of a spot in the next stage.

The contest kicked off with Round One, where St James Seminary SHS quickly established their dominance despite a rocky start. They finished the round with 21 points, ahead of Armed Forces SHTS at 11 points and Tsito SHTS at 10 points. The strong showing from St James hinted at the contest’s trajectory, setting the stage for what was to come.

Round Two, the Prudential Life Insurance Speed Race, saw St James Seminary SHS extending their lead with a score of 32 points. Armed Forces SHTS maintained their position in second place with 22 points, while Tsito SHTS struggled to break past the 10-point mark.

The “Problem of the Day” segment in Round Three, often regarded as a turning point, failed to deliver any surprises, as St James Seminary SHS continued to maintain their lead. With this round, St James inched up to 34 points, while Tsito SHTS and Armed Forces SHTS added three points each to reach 13 and 25 points, respectively.

The Jupay Money Transfer True/False round in Round Four did little to shake up the rankings. Despite all three schools missing one question, St James Seminary SHS solidified their lead with 47 points, while Armed Forces SHTS and Tsito SHTS ended the round with 26 and 38 points, respectively.

The contest’s outcome was ultimately decided in the GOIL Riddle Bonanza Round. St James Seminary SHS managed to answer one riddle correctly, reaching the 50-point mark, while Tsito SHTS answered two riddles but couldn’t close the gap enough to overtake St James. Armed Forces SHTS put up a spirited fight but fell short.

The final scores confirmed St James Seminary SHS’s advancement to the NSMQ 2024 Quarter-finals, leaving Armed Forces SHTS and Tsito SHTS behind. Despite their victory, St James narrowly missed the threshold needed to qualify for the Pepsodent Highest Scorer Award, indicating room for improvement in the upcoming rounds.
