In a thrilling climax to the 2024 National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ) semi-finals, St. Augustine’s College shattered a four-year dry spell by securing a coveted spot in the Grand Finale.
Competing against two formidable rivals, Ghana National College and Wesley Girls’ High School, St. Augustine’s delivered a performance that captivated audiences and sent their supporters into a frenzy of celebration. Their victory, with a high score of 52 points, brings them back to the NSMQ finale for the first time since 2019.
An Electrifying Atmosphere in the SGS Auditorium
The SGS Auditorium at the University of Cape Coast buzzed with excitement as fans from all three Central Region schools filled the venue early, with supporters fervently rallying behind their teams. Despite slight delays caused by the large turnout, the atmosphere remained charged as the three schools prepared to battle it out for a place in the Grand Finale.
Ghana National Takes the Lead in Round One
The contest kicked off with Ghana National College making a strong statement by taking an early lead in the General Questions Round, scoring an impressive 26 points. Darius, a standout participant from Ghana National, quickly won over the crowd, who roared with approval as he attempted to maintain dominance. However, St. Augustine’s College showed resilience, finishing the round with 24 points, while Wesley Girls’ High School closed with 21 points, setting the stage for a close contest.
St. Augustine’s Surge in the Prudential Life Insurance Speed Race
In the second round, St. Augustine’s College leapt ahead during the “Prudential Life Insurance Speed Race.” Known for its fast-paced format, this round allowed St. Augustine’s to capitalize on their agility and quick thinking, pushing them to the lead with 31 points. This advancement saw them overtake Ghana National College, which ended the round with 25 points, while Wesley Girls scored 22 points. This rapid surge boosted the confidence of St. Augustine’s supporters, who cheered as their school asserted dominance.
Securing the Lead in the Problem of the Day
Round Three, known as the “Problem of the Day,” proved to be decisive. St. Augustine’s continued their strong performance by scoring an impressive 8 out of 10 points, barely missing a perfect score due to time constraints. Ghana National College and Wesley Girls’ High School faced challenges in this round, scoring four and five points respectively. This allowed St. Augustine’s to consolidate their lead, bolstering their supporters’ hope for victory.
St. Augustine’s Consolidates Lead in Jupay Money Transfer Round
In the penultimate round, the “Jupay Money Transfer True or False” segment, St. Augustine’s College maintained their edge, increasing their tally to 52 points. By this stage, it was clear they were poised for victory, as Ghana National College and Wesley Girls trailed with 39 and 37 points, respectively.
A Final Round Victory Amid Fierce Competition
The final round, the “GOIL Super Riddle Bonanza,” saw Ghana National College fighting to catch up, successfully solving three riddles. Despite their valiant effort, the points gained were insufficient to close the gap, allowing St. Augustine’s College to finish with a high score of 52 points, which also earned them the Pepsodent Highest Scorer Award and a prize of GH₵ 3,000.
