Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon has pledged her support to help put up the proposed Hostel project by the University of Ghana Student Representative Council (SRC).
Hon. Lydia Alhassan Seyram who met with the UGSRC and the dean of students has stated that they are working on finding a lasting solution to accommodation crisis that has hit the University in the past few years and is a major concern for an estimated number of twenty thousand freshmen and continuing students who still have residential issues.
”…we are trying to find lasting solutions to these problems, we are are looking at next year and beyond double the students. A lot more students are going to be admitted so we need to have not so many commercial accommodations but student-led hostels, private hostels led by students themselves which will be easier and less cumbersome.” she said
Honorable Alhassan says together with the SRC and University Management, a roadmap will be put in place to clamp down on the issue. She said this in an exclusive interview with Univers News after a closed-door meeting with members of the UGSRC.
Hon. Lydia Alhassan Seyram further pleaded with hostel apartment owners in the enclave to refrain from charging students at exorbitant prices.
”I want to appeal with the landlords of hostels around to come down on the hostel fees. They shouldn’t give us commercial rate but charge us student rate so that our children can be on campus. Majority of our students are coming from far.we are pleading with them so they can come close to campus.
The proposed SRC Hostel which has been a major project of the SRC is yet to see the light of day after 17 years since its inception. Barring any challenges, the incumbent SRC Executive is certain that the project will commence before the end of their tenure of office.
