From Tears to Triumph: Princella Doe Becomes Valedictorian of Akatsi College of Education, Class of 2024

Princella Doe, once heartbroken by closed university doors, has risen to become the Valedictorian of Akatsi College of Education, Class of 2024. Her journey is a testament to resilience, faith, and determination.

A Journey Marked by Adversity

In 2019, a young Princella Doe wept quietly as university doors remained closed after her WASSCE results. A science student at E.P.C. Mawuko Girls’ Senior High School, she had dreamed of studying computer science at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), where she excelled in E-ICT, E-Maths, chemistry, and physics. But life intervened. The death of her father plunged the family into financial hardship, forcing Princella to support them. She moved to another town, working as an OTCMS apprentice from 2019 to 2020, selling medicines. Despite the tears and long nights, she never blamed her mother; instead, she trusted in God’s guidance.

A New Path: From UCC Dreams to Teaching

In 2020, she prepared applications for UCC but was persuaded by her family to consider teaching for stability. Fate intervened: UCC rejected her application, but Akatsi College of Education welcomed her. With support from her uncles, aunt, grandmother, and mother, she embraced this new journey. The first week on campus tested her resilience. Seniors created a challenging environment, and many nights were spent quietly with peers, soaking pillows in silent tears.

Leadership, Learning, and Personal Growth

By Level 200, Princella campaigned for SRC Vice President alongside her friend Fifi. Though she lost, the experience marked a personal victory, overcoming the leadership aspirations she had shelved after her father’s death. Refocused on her studies, she majored in ICT and minored in mathematics, finding fulfilment during teaching practice by creatively simplifying concepts for JHS students.  She also revived her hair-braiding skills to support her mother while continuing her love for singing, joining the college choir, and finally embracing the trumpet in the college band. Hosting and interviewing became another passion, highlighted by her role as co-MC of Face of AkatsiCOE ’24 after serving as Clerk of Parliament and Deputy Minority Leader in student leadership.

The Moment of Triumph

Then came the news she had long dreamed of but scarcely imagined: Princella Doe was named Valedictorian, the Overall Best Graduating Student. Overwhelmed with joy, she prepared her speech, reflecting on a journey that transformed closed doors into new opportunities.

Lessons in Resilience and Determination

Princella’s story is a powerful lesson for all students:
  • Never lose hope: Closed doors can redirect you to unforeseen brilliance.
  • Keep striving: Every small effort contributes to success.
  • Master a skill: Combine passion with practicality to ease life’s burdens.
  • Surround yourself with positivity: Supportive networks foster growth.
She reminds us that success is built step by step, with persistence and determination.
