The Ministry of Education has scheduled December 4, 2024, for the Free SHS Walk. Organized by the Free SHS Graduates Association, this event celebrates the transformative Free SHS policy.
The Ministry of Education (MoE) has announced Wednesday, December 4, 2024, as the official date for the 2024 edition of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) Walk. The event, organized by the Free SHS Graduates Association in collaboration with the Free Senior High School Secretariat, will commence at 6:00 AM from Sewua Junction to Aputuogya in the Bosomtwe District.
Event Highlights
The Free SHS Walk is an initiative aimed at celebrating the success of Ghana’s Free Senior High School program, a flagship policy under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led administration.
It is a platform for graduates, stakeholders, and supporters of the policy to showcase their solidarity and gratitude for the opportunities created by the Free SHS initiative.
The walk is organized by the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) Graduates Association, also known as “Nana Mma” (Akufo-Addo’s Children), a group launched on November 11, 2020, in Greater Kumasi by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The association serves as a collective of beneficiaries of the Free SHS program, highlighting its impact on their education and future prospects.
The Journey of “Nana Mma”
The term “Nana Mma” was coined by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his televised address in 2020, referring to the inaugural batch of Free SHS students who successfully completed their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since its inception, the Free SHS Graduates Association has been active in engaging the youth, celebrating educational milestones, and advocating for the continued expansion of the Free SHS policy to benefit future generations.
Community and National Impact
The Free SHS Walk serves as more than just a symbolic event; it is a testament to the transformative power of education policies aimed at breaking financial barriers for Ghanaian students.
This year’s walk is expected to draw a significant crowd, including students, parents, alumni, and government officials, demonstrating the broad-based support for the Free SHS initiative.
The event also highlights the collective achievements of the Free SHS program, which has enabled thousands of Ghanaian students to access secondary education and contributed to the overall development of the nation.
