As the 2024 edition of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) National Championship kicks off, eight private schools are preparing to make a strong impression in Ghana’s most prestigious academic competition. This year’s tournament, hosted at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), marks a significant opportunity for these private institutions to go head-to-head with their public counterparts and establish a legacy.

Eight Private Schools Set to Compete

For the first time in NSMQ history, some private schools will be making their debut at the National Championship. The eight private schools competing this year are:

  1. Regentropfen SHS (Upper East Region)
  2. Hope College (Central Region)
  3. St. Andrews SHS (Central Region)
  4. Wallahs Academy (Volta Region)
  5. Sonrise Christian High School (Volta Region)
  6. Bright SHS (Eastern Region)
  7. Our Lady of Grace SHS (Ashanti Region)
  8. Ghana-Lebanon Islamic SHS (Greater Accra Region)

With determination in their hearts and the desire to leave a mark, students from these schools are ready to compete fiercely against some of the best public schools in Ghana.

Private Schools Aim to Prove Their Mettle

The private schools have expressed their readiness and optimism for the competition. Speaking with some of the students upon their arrival at the UCC campus, they shared their aspirations to challenge the status quo and advocate for greater recognition of private institutions in the NSMQ.

“This is our moment,” said a student from Hope College. “We’re here to make history and show everyone what we’re capable of. It’s time to prove that private schools can compete at the highest level.”

The Growing Role of Private Schools in NSMQ

The inclusion of more private schools in the NSMQ reflects the evolving landscape of Ghanaian education, where both public and private institutions contribute to the development of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The participation of private schools in the 2024 National Championship highlights the growing need for a level playing field, where academic talent from all educational backgrounds can be celebrated.

With a mix of experienced contenders and newcomers, the private schools aim to showcase not only their knowledge and skills but also the importance of diversity in education.
