EDUCOM AWARDS 2019: Profile of Nominees and Winners of the 2019 Education Community Awards

The 4th edition of the Education Community Awards came off at the Holiday Inn in Accra on Saturday,August 31,2019.

Below is a list of nominees as well as winners of the Awards.

Names being highlighted are the winners in the various categories.

The Award has been organized by the Neogenc Education Group.

EDUCATIONAL BOOK AWARD

1. BEYOND THE CLASSROOM by DESMOND EDEM EKLU
Edem found out that, graduates need to acquire certain skills in order to land jobs. Thus he wrote a book titled (Beyond the Classroom) in which he shares strategies that will help graduates succeed after school.

2. THE ART OF AUTHORSHIP by GARMEL SINKARL
Gamel Sankarl through his book;’ Art of Authorship’ is helping students to discover their creative writing abilities, develop those abilities and deploy the abilities by authoring creative pieces of their own.

➢ CREATIVE DIGITAL TEACHER AWARD

3. DANIEL AFAVI DOTSE
Daniel Afavi Dotse, a teacher at Peak Lyceum in Tema uses technology creatively in his class by challenging his pupils to design their own power-point slides making use of different features.

4. KODUAH MENSAH RICHARD
Richard Koduah Mensah, a teacher at Bipoa D/A JSH in Ashanti Agona supports his pupils to produce any artefacts they found difficult to purchase for example teaching and learning materials in Basic Design and Technology.

5. OSUMANU ABDUL FATAO
Osmanu Abdul Fatao is a teacher at Corricreche & Crimson Dawn School in Akosombo. He creatively deploys the use of Krita, an online painting programme in teaching his pupils how to design various objects.

➢ PARENT OF THE YEAR AWARD

6. IBRAHIM MOHANNED AWAL
As a parent, Mr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal provides support services such as guidance and counselling occasionally to staff, pupils and the community.

7. JOYCE ADABLA
Mrs. Joyce Adabla as a parent plays an active role in her children’s education by consistently communicating with her teachers in school.

➢ MOST IMPROVED SCHOOL AWARD

8. WODOABA BASIC SCHOOL
Wudoaba Basic School is located in Aflao. With the help of a head teacher and the introduction of a reading culture in the school, Wudoaba Basic School has improved significantly and is now one of the best performing schools in the municipality.

9. INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY MONTESSORI SCHOOL
International Community Montessori School is located in Takoradi in the Western Region. ICMS started with two (2) pupils but seven (7) years down the lane, it’s a GES category ‘A’ school with 340 pupils.

10. INSTITUTE OF PARALEGAL TRAINING AND LEADERSHIP STUDIES
IPLS is known for championing Alternative Dispute Resolution and Paralegal Training in Ghana and provide access to Justice for the vulnerable in society.

11. NYARKOTEY COLLEGE OF HOLISTIC MEDICINE
Nyarkotey College of Holistic Medicine a Naturopathic Medical School offers the Professional Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine program and has made tremendous impact in the Natural Medicine community.

12. THE LEAP SCHOOLS
The LEAP Schools is a private institution which provides free tuition for children whose parents cannot afford to pay for their children.

➢ OUTSTANDING STUDENT ACHIEVEMNET
13. JOHN OSCAR KLUTSE
John Oscar Klutse is a student at the Akropong School for the Blind. He defies all odds to be the best student in class even though he is physically challenged

14. MATIPAISHE MAWUNGANIDZE
Matipaishe Mawunganidze was pegged as a trouble maker and someone who would not go far in Liberty American School because of his behaviour. However, he has been able to coach and mentor the Student Council candidates from his elementary department, and his protégé went on to be elected Student Council President for Elementary school.

➢ EDUCATION NGO OF THE YEAR

15. EDIFY GHANA
Edify Ghana is a non-governmental organisation which provides financial and technical support for schools in Ghana. In Ghana alone, Edify has impacted over two hundred thousand schools.

16. MY HOME TEACHER
My Home Teacher founded by Eric Vondee, connects parents to well-qualified teachers to tutor their wards at home on any subject. Parents will no longer struggle to get home tutors for their children.

17. LINTEL AID GHANA
Lintel Aid Ghana is a non-governmental organization which strives to see the betterment of others especially the vulnerable. Through its educational initiatives, programs and projects in various communities, Lintel Aid is making a difference one community at a time.

18. THE SHEPHERDS FOUNDATION
The Shepherds Foundation is a peer mentorship program, which provides career guidance, vocational assistance to needy students. They also support brilliant but needy students with teaching and learning materials.

19. NORSAAC
NORSAAC, a non-governmental organisation based in Tamale in the Northern Region engages in activities to promote education and bridge the gap between literacy and illiteracy in the region and country at large. Through the organization’s direct work with communities, it is able to identify gaps in policy that are affecting this target group.

➢ STUDENT ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR AWARD

20. FERDINAND BRIGHT JOE ASMAH
Ferdinand Bright Joe Asmah is a Social Entrepreneur, founder of BIK Libraries International, an NGO which empowers young people on “Reading and Learning” to higher heights.

21. ERIC VONDEE
Eric Vondee is the founder of My Home Teacher – a businessorganization that connects parents to well-qualified teachers to tutor their wards at home in anysubject.

22. ISAIAH LAAR
Laar Isaiah is a second year student of Presbyterian College of education and is the CEO of Isaiah’s Creations, a firm that offer Graphic designing services, T-Shirt printing and sale of customised football jerseys.

➢ MEDIA CONTRIBUTION TO EDUCATION AWARD

23. RADIO UNIVERS
Radio Univers is a campus based community radio station under the University of Ghana – Legon. The station covers education related issues via interviews and publishing of educational related stories.

24. EDUCATION GHANA MEDIA NETWORK
Education Ghana Media Network is the parent company of EducationGhana.net an online education resources and news website. Using the news website, they educate the masses on teacher licensing, double track system among other important issues.

25. COLLEGES OF EDUCATION WEEKLY JOURNAL
The Colleges of Education Weekly Journal is a weekly online newspaper that seeks to educate, inform and entertain all stakeholders associated with teacher education across the 46 public Colleges of Education in Ghana and beyond.

➢ OUTSTANDING TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION

26. SMARTSAPP
MineX 360’s flagship school management software, SmartSapp enhances security in schools, simplifies administrative processes and connects schools and parents at a whole new level. Parents can now track their children’s security in school from their phone!

27. ASANKA
TECHAID is using ASANKA, a software with its preloaded educational content to allow teachers to teach more dynamic and interactive classes. Educational content is made readily available and accessible to teachers.

 

➢ EDUCATION AND SCHOOL LEADERSHIP AWARD

28. BRIGHT AKOMEAH-BONSU
Bright Akomeah- Bonsu is a teacher at Peak Lyceum in Tema. As a leader, he is open to genuine and workable ideas from all stakeholders. He does not hesitate to give the green light to a new idea to test its workability.

29. CANDACE LARWEH MARTEY
Candace Larweh-Martey is the principal of Liberty American School in Accra. She has been very innovative by incorporating the GES curriculum with the US Common Core curriculum at LAS in order to serve the Ghanaian parent.

30. MERCY FOSUAA BINEY
Mercy Fosuaa Biney is the headmistress at the Victory Presbyterian School in Accra. Over the years in her capacity as headmistress at the JHS Department, students have excelled and have been adjudged best students at the regional levels through her hard work and discipline.

31. PATIENCE BOAME
Patience Boame is a teacher in Coaltar Presbyterian Basic School. Through motivation, selflessness and hard work, she has helped her school and teachers to achieve their goals.

➢ INSPIRATIONAL TEACHER AWARD

32. DOE ADDO NYANTOR
Doe Addo Nyantor is a teacher at the Nkoranza Senior High Technical in the Brong Ahafo Region. He set up the debating club, Maths club and Cadet Corps in his school to improve their academics and self-discipline.

33. UNITY DOH
Unity Doh is a teacher at Akropong School for the Blind. She is patient and takes very good care of the students. She bathes and feeds them and helps them through their daily routines.

34. PRISCILLA AKU ASARE
Priscilla Aku Asare, a teacher of Peak Lyceum in Tema has been teaching pre-school for years. She adapts diverse ways of learning using games, in and out of classroom experiences. She encourages group work in the classroom to build critical thinking in pupils.

35. STEPHEN SENYO TETTEGAH
Stephen Senyo Tettegah is with Teach for Ghana in Accra. He, upon realising that the challenge of reading was widespread in his community, created the Readers and Leaders project. Through the 1Student1Book initiative, he has acquired over 600 books to boost reading in the school and community.
