The Minister for Education has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to prevent public universities from increasing tuition fees, following concerns raised by MP Haruna Iddrisu during a Public Accounts Committee sitting.

Minister Intervenes to Prevent Fee Hikes in Public Universities

During a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) sitting, Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, disclosed that the Minister for Education has instructed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to halt all planned tuition fee increases by public universities.

The directive forms part of government’s broader efforts to ease the financial burden on students and ensure strict compliance with established fee regulation guidelines for tertiary institutions.

GTEC to Enforce Fee Compliance

According to the statement, the Education Minister’s instruction was issued after reports emerged that some public universities were considering upward adjustments in tuition and academic facility user fees.

Mr. Iddrisu explained that the intervention underscores the ministry’s commitment to fairness and accessibility in higher education financing, stressing that “no student should be denied education due to the inability to afford sudden fee increases.”

Background and Policy Context

Government policy requires all public tertiary institutions to seek approval from GTEC before making any changes to their fee structures. This regulation is designed to protect students and parents from arbitrary fee hikes and to promote transparency in institutional financial management.

The latest directive reaffirms the government’s stance on maintaining affordable education within the public university system, especially amid ongoing economic challenges affecting families across the country.
