Ferdinand | EducationGhana | April 17| Armed Attack on Adventist Students Fellowship in Ondo State Leaves One Shot, Ten Kidnapped
Members of the Adventist Students Fellowship, Port‑Harcourt Zone, were ambushed by armed assailants in Ondo State en route to Babcock University; one student was shot and ten were kidnapped.
Members of the Adventist Students Fellowship (ASF), Harcourt Zone—a student branch of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church—were violently ambushed in Ondo State yesterday while travelling to a conference at Babcock University. In the ensuing attack, one student was shot in the back, and at least ten others were forcibly taken by the gunmen.
The group had departed from Port Harcourt early in the morning, travelling by bus along the Akure-Ijebu-Ode route, when they were intercepted by a disguised militia operating in a convoy of unmarked vehicles. Witnesses report that the assailants blocked the road, disarmed the driver, and ordered the students off the bus at gunpoint.
> “We heard screams and gunfire. Before we could react, they had driven off with our friends,” recounted one of the students who managed to escape the initial assault.

Security forces from the Ondo State Police Command and local vigilante groups arrived on the scene shortly after the attack. The wounded student—a 19‑year‑old female member of the fellowship—was rushed to Ondo State Specialist Hospital, where she is listed in stable but critical condition.
The ASF leadership in Port Harcourt has condemned the attack in the strongest terms, calling on federal and state authorities to accelerate rescue efforts and bring the perpetrators to justice. In a statement, the church’s youth director appealed for prayers, vigilance, and swift action: “Our children were simply going to serve and worship. This violence must end.”
Babcock University has temporarily postponed the conference and mobilized its own security team to assist in locating the kidnapped students. Meanwhile, emergency meetings between state security chiefs, church leaders, and vigilante coordinators are underway to coordinate a multi‑agency response.
This violent incident has reignited concerns over the safety of student groups traveling on rural highways and reinforced calls for improved security patrols, intelligence‑led roadblocks, and community engagement to protect vulnerable road users.
