Allowing all Teachers to come to school against our MoU;stop it – Teacher Unions to GES

Pre-Tertiary Education Teacher Unions have cautioned the Ghana Education Service (GES) to desist from ordering teachers who were not on duty to compulsorily come to school to teach the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) Candidates.

The Unions in a statement issued on Thursday, June 2, 2020, indicated that the directive from the GES to teachers was against6 the Memorandum of Understanding between the Jubilee House, the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service on one hand and the Pre-Tertiary Education Unions on the other hand, as well as Public Services Commission in a letter dated March 23, 2020, which considers the health of the teachers as well as the students at larger in the midst of preventing the spread of the COVID-19.

According to the Unions, the decision by the GES was surprising, unfortunate and disturbing that the GES, which was a party in the process throughout, has decided not only to do otherwise, but also implementing issues which are contrary to the MoU on the blind side of the Pre-Tertiary Education Unions.

The Unions thereby demand that any Teacher who is not on duty and has no schedule for the day should be on standby in the house and not in the school.

This according to the Unions, shall ensure that there is minimum number of staff at the workplace at a given time.

They also suggested that the plans could include adjusting working hours, the introduction of shifts and rotation to effectively manage the workforce as enjoined by the Public Services Commission.
