Graduate students across Africa are set to benefit from a two-day Academic Writing Masterclass in January 2026, led by international and local scholars to strengthen research writing skills.

Why Academic Writing Remains a Major Challenge for Graduate Students

For many Master’s and PhD students, academic writing is one of the most demanding aspects of graduate study. Translating complex ideas into clear, structured, and publishable scholarly work often proves difficult, even for strong students. To address this challenge, an Academic Writing Masterclass for Graduate Students has been announced, aimed at equipping participants with practical strategies for effective academic and research writing.

Two-Day Intensive Training Scheduled for January 2026

The masterclass will take place over two days, from January 21 to January 22, 2026, offering focused training sessions designed to improve clarity, argument development, coherence, and scholarly voice in academic texts. The programme targets postgraduate students, early-career researchers, and academics seeking to strengthen their writing for theses, dissertations, and journal publications.

Renowned Scholars to Facilitate the Sessions

The training will be facilitated by experienced academics with strong international and local research credentials:
  • Professor Sarah Stutterheim, Maastricht University, The Netherlands
  • Dr. Mary Ani-Amponsah, University of Ghana
Moderation will be handled by Dr. Yaa Obirikorang, Programme Lead at Africa-CIRT, ensuring structured engagement and guided discussions throughout the sessions.

What Participants Can Expect

Participants are expected to gain practical insights into:
  • Structuring academic arguments clearly
  • Writing with precision and coherence
  • Meeting scholarly and journal standards
  • Improving thesis and dissertation chapters
  • Developing confidence in academic voice and style
The training emphasises applied learning rather than theory, making it especially useful for students currently writing or preparing to write graduate research.
