The Ashanti Regional Security Council has warned students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) against organizing activities that may disturb the peace of the university.
This was contained in a letter signed by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, to the Vice-Chancellor of the University.
In the letter, University authorities were reminded of last year’s declaration of the area as a security zone.
The Minister, who is Chairman of the Security Council says that that declaration, which was made in September amid fears that some persons were scheming to demonstrate in the school, is still in force and must be upheld until further notice.
“The attention of the Regional Security Council has been drawn to the celebration of the 2019/2020 Hall Week of various Halls of Residence scheduled for the period of February 26th to April 11, 2020. It is the expectation of the Regional Security Council that students are reminded that the declaration of the University as a Security Zone is still in force and must be strictly observed,” part of the letter reads.
The Regional Minister also warned that “breaches will attract the maximum legal security penalty or sanctions associated with it.”
KNUST declared security zone
In September 2019, the Ashanti Regional Security Council declared Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) a security zone.
The declaration followed fears that some persons were scheming to protest against University authorities.
A statement from the Regional Coordinating Council said it has intelligence “that, some members of the alumni are instigating their members and students to engage in activities that will disturb academic work and peace on campus.”
The statement cautioned against any such protest, adding that any grievances against the university be directed to the appropriate authorities.
