A new era has begun at the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) as Prof. Samuel Ofori Bekoe officially assumed office as Director-General on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, following a symbolic handing-over ceremony held at NaCCA Headquarters in Accra.
The transition marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s curriculum reform journey, as Prof. Bekoe takes over from Prof. Yayra Dzakadzie, whose term witnessed key strides in the design and implementation of Ghana’s standards-based and competency-based curricula.
From One Academic Visionary to Another
In a heartfelt farewell address, Prof. Dzakadzie expressed gratitude to NaCCA staff, development partners, and Ghana’s broader education community. He cited major achievements, including;
- The national rollout of the Common Core Programme (CCP)
- Revisions to Early Grade curricula
- Piloting of formative assessment models in basic and secondary schools
- Increased stakeholder engagement in curriculum reviews
“The journey has been one of shared purpose. I am confident that the Council is in good hands to carry the vision forward,” Prof. Dzakadzie stated.
Prof. Bekoe’s Vision: Collaboration, Curriculum Innovation, and Impact
Accepting the baton of leadership, Prof. Samuel Ofori Bekoe pledged to build upon the foundations laid and to further galvanise the council toward excellence in curriculum and assessment reform.
“This role is not just about leadership but about service—to learners, teachers, parents, and to the nation,” Prof. Bekoe emphasised.
“We will work together to strengthen our curriculum, enrich assessments, and most importantly, improve learning outcomes for every Ghanaian child.”
Known for his academic rigor and field-based insight into teacher development, learning assessments, and education systems research, Prof. Bekoe brings both continuity and fresh vision to NaCCA’s critical mandate.
Strategic Priorities Ahead
Prof. Bekoe is expected to focus on several key priority areas:
- Consolidation of competency-based curriculum implementation

- Strengthening assessment literacy across all teacher education levels
- Enhancing collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and National Teaching Council (NTC)
Why NaCCA Matters in Ghana’s Educational Future

- Critical thinking
- Digital literacy
- Problem-solving
- Global citizenship
With new reforms such as TVET curricular redesign, creative arts frameworks, and school-based continuous assessments, the Council’s leadership remains pivotal.
