Professor Samuel Awinkene Atintono, Principal of Accra College of Education, has been honoured as Best Principal of the Year at the Ghana Education Awards 2025 for outstanding leadership and service.By Ellis Ferdinand The Principal of Accra College of Education, Professor Samuel Awinkene Atintono, has been adjudged Best Principal of the Year (Colleges of Education category) at the Ghana Education Awards 2025, in recognition of his exceptional leadership and contribution to teacher education in Ghana.The award was presented to Prof. Atintono shortly after the annual congress of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), where education stakeholders, students, and union leaders converged to celebrate excellence across the education sector. 

Basis for Selection

Presenting the citation, the outgoing President of NUGS, Daniel Botchway, explained that nominees for the Best Principal category were drawn from institutions across the country following an open nomination process.He noted that while several principals were nominated, the final decision was made by the awards committee after a detailed assessment of nominees’ leadership records, institutional impact, professional background, and service to students and staff.According to Mr. Botchway, Prof. Atintono stood out for his consistent leadership, administrative discipline, and commitment to improving academic and welfare standards within the colleges of education system.

National Recognition of Leadership

The Ghana Education Awards is an annual initiative that honours individuals and institutions that have distinguished themselves within the education sector over the year under review. The awards cover about 50 categories, spanning basic education, secondary education, tertiary institutions, and educational leadership.Prof. Atintono’s recognition places Accra College of Education at the centre of national discourse on effective institutional leadership and student-centred governance.

Prof. Atintono’s Response

In his acceptance remarks, Prof. Atintono expressed gratitude to the student body for the honour, describing the award as unexpected.He noted that he was simply discharging his responsibilities as Principal of Accra College of Education and as President of the Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education, Ghana (PRINCOF), without any anticipation of public recognition.“This award is a reminder that our actions are being observed. Whatever we do, we must do it well,” he said.Prof. Atintono assured students and staff of his continued commitment to advancing quality teacher education, strengthening institutional governance, and improving the welfare of both lecturers and students across colleges of education.
