Spotlight on Selected New Entrants

Abomusu STEM SHS (Eastern Region)

Our Lady of Lourdes Girls’ SHS (Volta Region)

This all-girls school is making history as one of the few new female institutions to qualify for the NSMQ in recent years. Their entry is a boost for girls’ education and gender representation in a competition historically dominated by boys’ schools.

Juaboso SHS (Western North Region)

Western North, one of Ghana’s newest regions, now has Juaboso SHS carrying its hopes on the national stage. Their qualification is significant as it signals the rise of smaller regional schools challenging the dominance of traditional powerhouses.

T.I. AMASS, Salaga (Savannah Region)

The Ahmadiyya brand has produced strong contenders in Kumasi and elsewhere. Salaga’s debut marks an expansion of this tradition and could inspire other schools in the Savannah Region to aim higher academically.

What New Entrants Mean for NSMQ 2025

The NSMQ has traditionally been dominated by established schools with long histories of participation, like PRESEC-Legon (8-time champions), Prempeh College (5-time champions), and St. Augustine’s College (2-time champions). The arrival of 15 new entrants changes the narrative in several ways:
  • Inclusivity: Schools from emerging regions like Savannah and Western North are now represented, giving the competition more national balance.
  • STEM and Technical Education: With the entry of STEM-focused and technical schools, the competition reflects Ghana’s changing educational priorities.
  • Girls’ Participation: The inclusion of Our Lady of Lourdes Girls’ SHS strengthens the visibility of female students in science and mathematics.
  • Unpredictability: New entrants bring fresh energy and unpredictability, often springing surprises in the early rounds against established giants.

The Road Ahead

As the competition unfolds, all eyes will be on how these schools perform in the face of experienced seeded schools. While winning the championship in their debut year may be ambitious, their very presence has already expanded the horizon of what is possible in the NSMQ.In the long term, these schools could inspire a new wave of academic enthusiasm in their regions. Success stories from their participation could lead to improved investment in teaching, science labs, and student motivation.

Conclusion

The 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz will not just be remembered for the seeded giants but also for the 15 new entrants who have added colour, diversity, and anticipation to the contest. From Abomusu STEM SHS in the Eastern Region to Wovenu SHTS in the Volta Region, these schools remind us that academic excellence is not the preserve of a few but a growing aspiration across Ghana. The journey has just begun for these institutions, but their debut is already a victory for their students, communities, and Ghana’s education system.
