Oti Region at NSMQ 2025

The Oti Region, carved from the Volta Region in 2019, is still building its identity in the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ). Despite being a relatively new region, Oti’s schools are gradually stepping up to the national stage, eager to prove their capacity in science and mathematics education. For the 2025 championship, Oti Region has representation through Bueman SHS, Kadjebi-Asato SHS, Krachi SHS, and St. Mary’s Seminary SHS (Lolabi). These schools embody the region’s growing investment in education and its ambition to make a mark on the national contest.

Oti Region Schools at NSMQ 2025

According to the official NSMQ 2025 schools list, the following schools represent Oti Region:
  • Bueman Senior High School (Busec)
  • Kadjebi-Asato Senior High School (KASEC)
  • Krachi Senior High School
  • St. Mary’s Seminary Senior High School, Lolobi

Spotlight on Oti Region’s Contestants

Bueman SHS

Bueman SHS has consistently carried the mantle for Oti Region in recent NSMQ contests. The school has become a regional powerhouse, often the first name mentioned when Oti’s science and mathematics performance is discussed. Their resilience at the national level has earned them respect beyond the region.

Kadjebi-Asato SHS (KASEC)

One of the oldest senior high schools in the area, KASEC combines history with ambition. Though not yet a national champion, the school’s participation ensures Oti Region remains visible in the national discourse on STEM education.

Krachi SHS

As a school situated in a farming and fishing zone, Krachi SHS symbolizes the importance of education as a tool for community transformation. Their qualification for NSMQ 2025 demonstrates progress in bridging rural-urban educational gaps.

St. Mary’s Seminary SHS, Lolobi

With its Catholic background, St. Mary’s Seminary SHS blends moral discipline with intellectual training. Their presence in NSMQ adds diversity to the Oti Region’s representation, bringing a seminary tradition to the competition.

Girls’ Schools and Gender Representation

Unlike regions such as the Eastern or Central with multiple all-girls’ schools, Oti Region still has a notable gender gap in STEM participation. None of the schools representing the region in NSMQ 2025 are all-girls’ institutions. This highlights the need for targeted policies by the Ghana Education Service to encourage and support female participation in science education in the Oti Region.

Challenges Facing Oti Region Schools

Being one of Ghana’s youngest regions, Oti schools face challenges such as:
  • Inadequate laboratory infrastructure for advanced science practicals.
  • Limited access to experienced STEM teachers.
  • Funding constraints for NSMQ preparations compared to older, well-resourced schools in regions like Ashanti or Central.
Despite these challenges, Oti’s participation in NSMQ 2025 signals steady progress and the determination of its schools to rise above limitations.

The Future of Oti Region in NSMQ

The inclusion of four schools in the NSMQ 2025 lineup shows Oti Region’s educational sector is moving in the right direction. With investments in teacher training, laboratories, and mentorship programs, the region has the potential to produce future champions. The dream is that Bueman SHS or KASEC could soon become seeded schools, paving the way for other Oti institutions to follow.
