North East Region at NSMQ 2025

The North East Region, one of Ghana’s youngest regions, continues to build its presence in the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ). While the region does not yet boast a seeded team, its schools remain determined to prove themselves on the national stage.

Seeded Schools

For NSMQ 2025, no school from the North East Region is seeded. However, the qualifiers have shown that schools in this area are steadily improving their competitiveness.

Regional Qualifiers for NSMQ 2025

The confirmed qualifiers for the North East Region are:

  • Bunkpurugu Senior High School (Bunkpurugu SHS)
  • Walewale Senior High School (Walewale SHS)
  • Ghana Senior High School (Ghana SHS, Tamale) – reinstated after Sakogu SHTS withdrew from the contest, as it was the highest-scoring runner-up (MyJoyOnline).

This adjustment ensures that the North East Region still fields a competitive lineup for the 2025 NSMQ.

Spotlight on North East Contenders

Bunkpurugu SHS

A community-based school, Bunkpurugu SHS carries the hopes of its district and has shown resilience in regional contests. Their NSMQ 2025 participation highlights how rural schools can challenge better-resourced institutions.

Walewale SHS

Walewale SHS continues to strengthen its academic profile. Their consistent presence in NSMQ contests signals their ambition to establish themselves as a future powerhouse in the region.

Ghana SHS, Tamale

Though based in the Northern Region, Ghana SHS was reinstated into the North East qualifiers due to special circumstances. Its experience in past NSMQ competitions adds a strong dimension to the region’s representation.

Gender Representation

The North East Region still has limited representation from all-girls’ schools in NSMQ. This highlights the need for focused investment in promoting girls’ participation in STEM education, in line with national gender equity goals (MoE Ghana).

Challenges Facing North East Schools

Schools in the North East face unique challenges including limited science laboratory facilities, inadequate resources, and infrastructural gaps. However, the Free SHS programme and support from the Ghana Education Service are gradually bridging these inequalities.

The Future of North East in NSMQ

While the region is still establishing its presence, the qualification of Bunkpurugu SHS, Walewale SHS, and Ghana SHS reflects steady progress. With continuous improvement and investment, the North East Region could soon rise to challenge established NSMQ powerhouses across Ghana.
