Wesley Girls’ High School clinched a hard-fought victory over Amaniampong SHS to advance to the quarter-final stage of the National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ). The intense competition, held on October 16, 2024, saw Wesley Girls’ narrowly winning after a dramatic tie-breaker, making it a contest to remember.

A Fierce Battle from the Start

The contest began with high spirits as alumni and students of Wesley Girls’ High School filled the auditorium to cheer on their team. A spirited ‘jama’ session, led by a Wesley Girls’ student, set the tone for the challenge ahead. The school’s supporters were joined by some male fans who also came to rally behind the participants.

After the first round, which tested students on subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology, Wesley Girls’ High School emerged as the leader with 20 points, followed by Amaniampong SHS with 16 points and Ashaiman SHS trailing with 11 points. Despite Wesley Girls’ taking an early lead, all three schools lodged multiple protests, causing delays in the announcement of results.

The Quiz Mistress, Dr. Mrs. Gladys Odey Schwinger, deferred the announcement of the first-round results until after consultations with the quiz’s official consultants. To resolve one protest, a biology question from the first round had to be replaced.

Challenges in the Prudential Life Insurance Speed Race

The second round, known as the Prudential Life Insurance Speed Race, proved to be a tough hurdle for all three schools. Amaniampong SHS surged ahead with 24 points, followed by Wesley Girls’ at 18 points, while Ashaiman SHS maintained 11 points. Amaniampong’s impressive performance temporarily put them ahead of the competition.

Struggles in the ‘Problem of the Day’

The third round, referred to as the ‘Problem of the Day,’ was challenging for the contestants. Amaniampong SHS earned 28 points, Wesley Girls’ scored 20, and Ashaiman SHS managed 12 points. The gap began to widen as Amaniampong took the lead, prompting Wesley Girls’ to regroup for the upcoming rounds.

The standings at the end of this round saw Amaniampong SHS in the lead with 41 points, followed by Wesley Girls’ with 33 points, and Ashaiman SHS with 22 points.

A Dramatic Finale in the Goil Riddle Bonanza

The final round, the Goil Riddle Bonanza, brought a thrilling twist to the competition. Wesley Girls’ High School capitalized on Amaniampong SHS’s inability to answer the riddles correctly, resulting in both teams tying at 44 points each. With a spot in the quarter-finals at stake, the contest proceeded to a tie-breaker.
