🌍 New GES Curriculum 2025 Overview: What Ghanaian Schools Need to Know

Ghana’s education landscape is undergoing a major transformation in 2025, as the Ghana Education Service (GES) and National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) roll out an updated standards-based curriculum across basic schools—from Kindergarten to SHS. Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of the changes, according to official documents and expert analysis  .

🔧 1. Curriculum Restructuring & Terminology

All levels, from KG to SHS, are now classified as Basic School (BS):

BS 7 = JHS 1

BS 8 = JHS 2

BS 9 = JHS 3

BS 10 = SHS 1

This unifies the educational structure and eases transition between stages.

📘 2. Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) Emphasis

The curriculum centers on 21st-century skills, including critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, ICT, and national values  .

Teachers are supported with weekly PLC sessions and manuals to guide delivery  .

📚 3. Flexible Subject Choices & New Pathways

In JHS–SHS1 (BS 7–10), students follow a Common Core Programme (CCP) of nine subjects, including Maths, Languages, Science, RME, PE, Career Tech, Social Studies, Computing, and Creative Arts  .

From SHS2 (BS 11), students choose either a vocational pathway or a diploma stream (arts, business, science)  .

Students will sit a Common Core Exam after SHS1, with WASSCE replaced by a University Entrance Exam at SHS3  .

🧩 4. Primary School Reforms

KG learning areas streamlined from seven to four thematic areas: Numeracy, Literacy, Creative Arts, and “Our World, Our People”  .

Primary levels maintain the same number of subjects but with fewer, deeper concepts and a move to standards‑based learning  .

History of Ghana, RME, PE, and French (from P4) are now standalone subjects  .

📊 5. New National Standard Assessments

National assessments will be held at:

Primary 2, 4, 6

JHS 2 These NSATs replace continuous class-level tests  .

🧪 6. Revised Assessment Model for SHS

For SHS, GES and WAEC now require six assessment modes, including:

Class/home exercises, mid- and end‑semester exams

Group projects, individual portfolios, and projects  .

GES and WAEC will conduct monitoring visits in February 2025 to ensure fidelity of implementation  .

🌱 7. Emphasis on Inclusion & Climate Literacy

New curriculum integrates climate change, forestry, and green economy issues—piloted in 33 schools  .

Focus is on SEL, gender equality, and national values within both CBC and SHS materials  .
