Minimum Qualifications for PGDE Admission in Ghana

1. A First Degree from a Recognised University

Applicants must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree (BA, BSc, BComm, BEd, etc.) from an accredited institution in Ghana or abroad.
Most universities accept:

  • Second Class Upper or better as standard
  • Second Class Lower is usually accepted
  • Some universities may consider Third Class applicants, especially in Education-related special tracks (subject to interview or bridging course)

2. Professional or Academic Background

Applicants must have a degree in any field, but preference is often given to:

  • Arts and Social Sciences graduates
  • Sciences and Mathematics graduates
  • Business and Management graduates
  • Technical, Vocational, and STEM-related graduates
  • Candidates intending to enter basic, secondary, or TVET teaching

3. Motivation to Enter the Teaching Profession

Most institutions require evidence of commitment to teaching, assessed through:

  • A statement of purpose
  • Interview (in some cases)
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in teaching, mentoring, or community education programmes

4. National Teaching Council (NTC) Requirements

Under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act 2020 (Act 1023):

  • Every teacher must be licensed
  • The PGDE qualifies non-professional degree holders for teacher licensure
  • Applicants must agree to register with the NTC upon completion

University of Cape Coast (UCC)

  • Accepts degree holders from recognised institutions

KNUST

  • Accepts degree holders in STEM, Social Sciences, Arts, Business, and related areas
  • Minimum Second Class Lower
  • Programme focuses on pedagogy for senior high schools and technical fields

AAMUSTED

  • Accepts degree holders with interest in teaching or TVET
  • Known for flexible entry for all degree classes

University for Development Studies (UDS)

  • Accepts degree holders for both basic and secondary levels
  • Offers weekend and distance learning options

6. Additional Criteria

Depending on the university, applicants may need:

  • Birth certificate or national ID
  • Transcripts and certified copies of degree certificates
  • Passport-sized photographs
  • Proof of English proficiency (for foreign applicants)
  • Application fee payment receipt

7. Duration of Programme

  • Regular/Sandwich: usually 1 academic year (16 to 20 weeks per sandwich session)
  • Distance: varies from 1 to 2 semesters depending on structure
