Ferdinand | EducationGhana | September 15 | Mid-Term Break Makes a Comeback: GES Reintroduces Breaks in All 3 Terms of Basic School Calendar
2025/2026 Academic Year includes a historic mid-term break in every term — Here’s why it matters academically
GES reintroduces mid-term breaks in all three terms of the 2025/2026 academic year for basic schools. Learn why this move supports student well-being and teacher performance.
In a strategic move to enhance teaching and learning, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the return of mid-term breaks in all three terms of the 2025/2026 academic year for basic schools across the country. This is the first time since the pandemic-induced disruptions that structured mid-term breaks have been officially scheduled for every term.
The announcement was made via an official release signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at GES, and directed to all heads of basic schools and regional directors. The calendar covers Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High Schools.
📌 What Are Mid-Term Breaks, and Why Are They Important?
Midterm breaks are short rest periods within an academic term that allow students and teachers to rejuvenate mentally and physically. Their reintroduction is backed by several educational benefits:
✅ Academic Benefits of Mid-Term Breaks:
- Prevents Burnout
With continuous academic activities, students and teachers often face fatigue. A mid-term break gives the brain time to rest and reset. - Promotes Better Learning Outcomes
Studies show students return more focused and perform better academically after short breaks. - Opportunity for Remedial Support
Schools often use this period to help struggling learners catch up or revise key concepts. - Teacher Professional Development
Midterm periods are also used for staff workshops, curriculum reviews, or internal planning. - Mental Health Support
In a high-pressure environment, a short break can ease anxiety, stress, and behavioral issues among learners.
