The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) says it will this year use fingerprint scanners as part of efforts to curb impersonation during the conduct of the 2020 examinations WASSCE for school candidates.

The Council has over the past year’s recorded cases of impersonation during the conduct of some national examination particularly for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The Head of Public Affairs of WAEC, Agnes Teye-Cudjoe speaking in a Zoom interview with Samuel Eshun on Happy Morning Show monitored by Georgeweb.org said: “WAEC will use fingerprint scanners to check impersonation during this year’s exams”.

Mrs Agnes Teye Cudjoe noted that this forms part of measures put in place by the West Africa Examination Council to curb cases of examination malpractices in the country.

The Head of Public Affairs when asked by host Samuel Eshun how this could be possibly explained that the examination registration includes a feature where fingerprints of candidates are captured for such checks.

She stressed that the fingerprints of all the prospective candidates will be checked according to index numbers with the deployed fingerprint scanners.

As the 2020 WASSCE for school begins in August this year, she advised the candidates to focus on their books and prepare well for the exams.

“The test is based on what they have learned. It is from their syllabus and if they prepare adequately, they will succeed,” she told Eshun.

As part of measures put in place by WAEC to protect students from contracting the novel coronavirus that has claimed 122 lives of the time writing this post, Mrs. Agnes Teye Cudjoe entreated candidates to report to the examination centres at least an hour to the start of the exams.

He on behalf of the Council assured that the annual examination leakages associated with the conduct of the test will not be experienced this year.
