JUST IN: Ghana to write WASSCE 2020 with other West African Countries in August

The Deputy Director of Public Affairs of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Mrs. Agnes Teye-Cudjoe says candidates in Ghana in August will be writing the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) but not the Ghana Exams.

Mrs. Agnes Teye-Cudjoe speaking in a Zoom interview with Samuel Eshun on Happy Morning Show monitored by Georgeweb.org on modalities for the conduct of the forthcoming 2020 WASSCE said all the five English-speaking West African countries: Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, the Gambia, and Liberia have agreed to partake in the annual West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The Minister for Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh addressing the press on a Tuesday morning renamed this year’s WASSCE as Ghana exams amid the outbreak of the novel virus, adding that its a ‘Country Specific Exams’ for only Ghanaian students.

The Education Minister explained that the conduct of the ‘Country Specific Exams’ for only Ghanaian students have become necessary because countries in the West African sub-region are battling the COVID-19 pandemic and it would be difficult to agree on a common date for writing the examinations.

He furthered that the Government of Ghana (GoG) has consulted the management of the Ghana WAEC to set questions for the country since other countries in the sub-regions are still battling the pandemic.

However, the Deputy Director of Public Affairs of the non-profit-making organization (WAEC) has disclosed that the Examination Council is ready to conduct the 2020 WASSCE for school candidates since all other member countries are prepared to join despite the existence of the novel coronavirus.

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) earlier in a statement copied to Georgeweb.org announced the suspension of the conduct of WASSCE for School Candidates amid the global coronavirus pandemic.

The Council explained that the suspension is in line with the protocols put in place by governments of WAEC member countries to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.

It also suspended the timetable for the 2020 WASSCE for School Candidates until further notice, adding that a new timetable will be designed and made available to all stakeholders when the situation is restored to normalcy.
