The Minister of Education, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh,(NAPO) has stated that Government has given financial clearance for the recruitment of about 27,000 Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
He made this revelation at a Press Briefing on the preparedness of the Education Ministry ahead of the reopening of schools for final year students in all levels of education across the country on Tuesday, June 2, 2020.
The Minister said the number shall comprise 16,500 newly trained teachers, 6,500 graduate teachers, 3,232 replacement staff and 1,135 non-teaching staff, making a total of 27,367 staff.

Recruitment since 2017
The Minister further indicated, that government has recruited a total of 93,724 staff who have been recruited into the pre-tertiary sector since this government took over in 2017.
He elaborated, that in 2017 some 19,640 teachers were recruited under the Limited Recruitment Exercise, with 14,170 Newly Trained Teachers.

In 2018, there has been a recruitment of 8,872 Double-Track Teachers , whilst in 2019, government recruited 1,445 Double Track Non-Teaching Staff,14,500 Newly Trained Teachers and GES/YEA Non-Teaching Staff of 7,730.
In the tertiary space, he stated that the government has since 2017 employed 6,178 staff.
The Minister also revealed that teachers who were recently engaged have been paid all their salary arrears, a departure from the three months’ pay policy under the previous government.
