Ferdinand | EducationGhana | September 17 | How Teachers Can Earn 20 CPD Points Annually Under the New NTC Framework
The National Teaching Council (NTC) requires all teachers in Ghana to earn 20 CPD points annually. Here’s a practical step-by-step guide on how teachers can meet this requirement through PLCs, National CPD Days, accredited service providers, and self-initiated programmes.
Introduction
The National Teaching Council (NTC) has revised the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) framework for teachers in Ghana, setting a uniform requirement of 20 CPD points per year. Every teacher, regardless of rank, must meet this standard to renew their license and progress professionally.
This guide explains how teachers can earn their 20 CPD points under the new system.
1. Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)
Points Earned: 8 points annually
Cost: Free (employer-sponsored)
Activities: School-based activities such as lesson demonstrations, peer mentoring, reflective discussions, and workshops facilitated by headteachers or CPD coordinators.
👉 Teachers are expected to attend at least one PLC session per month. Attendance will be recorded and uploaded onto the Teacher Portal Ghana (TPG) system.
2. Attend National CPD Days
Points Earned: 4 points annually
Cost: Shared between employer and teachers (subsidized)
Activities: National or regional CPD events organized by NTC, Ghana Education Service (GES), or the Ministry of Education.
These days are designed to address national educational priorities, such as curriculum reforms, assessment literacy, and inclusive education.
3. Engage in Specialised/Targeted CPD Programmes
Points Earned: 4–6 points annually
Cost: Fee-based (with NTC oversight on pricing)
Activities: Workshops, training, or seminars delivered by NTC-accredited service providers. Examples include ICT in education, leadership training, or curriculum-specific courses.
Teachers are advised to verify accreditation of providers before enrolling to avoid exploitation.
4. Undertake Recommended or Self-Initiated CPD
Points Earned: 2–4 points annually (optional)
Cost: Varies (some free, others paid)
Activities: Online courses, webinars, research, conferences, or professional workshops relevant to teaching practice.
This category allows teachers to take ownership of their professional growth. Points can be claimed once evidence is uploaded to the TPG.
5. Record All CPD Points on Teacher Portal Ghana (TPG)
All activities—PLCs, National CPD Days, service provider programmes, or self-initiated CPDs—must be recorded on the TPG platform. Teachers should:
Log into their TPG account.
Upload certificates or proof of participation.
Monitor their CPD points to ensure they meet the annual 20-point target.
Summary Breakdown of CPD Points
Category | Annual Points | Cost |
---|---|---|
Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) | 8 points | Free |
National CPD Days | 4 points | Subsidized |
Specialised/Targeted CPD | 4–6 points | Fee-based |
Self-Initiated CPD (Optional) | 2–4 points | Varies (some free) |
👉 Total Required: 20 CPD points annually
Why This Matters
Meeting the 20 CPD points ensures that teachers:
Remain professionally licensed under the NTC.
Qualify for promotion and professional progression.
Stay updated with modern teaching methods, curriculum reforms, and educational innovations.
Demonstrate commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth.
