Discover how Senior High Schools (SHSs) in Ghana are contributing to national food security through innovative agriculture projects, TVET integration, and student entrepreneurship.

SHSs as Catalysts for Agricultural Transformation

Ghana’s growing commitment to food sovereignty and youth-led development is seeing a quiet revolution led by Senior High Schools (SHSs). In 2025, over 150 SHSs across the country are actively cultivating fields, managing aquaculture ponds, and raising livestock as part of their core curriculum and extracurricular programs.

With support from the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, and partners like Kosmos Innovation Center and the Mastercard Foundation, these schools are no longer just academic centers but mini agricultural hubs.

Why SHS Food Projects Are a Game-Changer

1. Agricultural Science Is Now Hands-On

Under Ghana’s reformed STEM and TVET-aligned curriculum, Agricultural Science is taught with strong practical emphasis. Schools like Odorgonno SHS, Bawku SHS, and Ejura SHS have taken the lead by cultivating high-value crops and rearing livestock with student management.

2. Farming Becomes a Career Option

SHS students are not just farming—they’re building business models, learning agri-marketing, and understanding value addition. This aligns with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture’s push to turn the youth into agripreneurs.

3. School Farms as Food Sources

Some schools use their produce to supplement meals, reducing food costs and instilling self-reliance. Others, like St. Monica’s SHS and Navrongo SHS, supply local markets, helping stabilize food supply in their communities.

4. National Initiatives Supporting the Movement

  • Green Ghana Programme: Encourages every student to plant a tree; many SHSs have developed permanent nurseries.

  • School Farm Awards (Kosmos Innovation Center): Recognizes schools excelling in sustainable, scalable agri-projects.

  • Ghana CARES Programme: Supports select SHSs with irrigation kits, farming tools, and agri-labs.

📊 The Impact in Numbers (2025)

  • Over 150 SHSs have active farms.

  • 20,000+ students engaged in agriculture-related clubs and programs.

  • 12,000 acres cultivated nationwide across all 16 regions.

  • 30% of produce goes to local communities and school feeding initiatives.

🧠 Key Skills Students Are Gaining

  • Irrigation and climate-smart farming

  • Organic fertilizer preparation

  • Animal husbandry and fish farming

  • Agro-enterprise management

  • Soil and water testing using digital tools

🌍 Connecting SHS Farming to National Policy

The Ministry of Education and Ministry of Food and Agriculture now consider SHS-based agriculture a core pillar in achieving SDG 2: Zero Hunger. Education Minister Hon. Haruna Iddrisu recently remarked:

“Our SHSs are not just training future professionals; they’re feeding communities and driving innovation at the grassroots.”
