💡 Government Commits GH¢40 Million to Accelerate Growth of Young Universities
The Minister for Education, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, has revealed that the government of Ghana, through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), has allocated a GH¢40 million seed fund to support the development of four emerging public universities.
Speaking at the 5th Congregation Ceremony of the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) in Navrongo, Upper East Region, on Saturday, 21st June 2025, the Minister said the funding is part of a broader initiative to build capacity in newer tertiary institutions.
🎓 Beneficiary Institutions
The universities set to benefit from this crucial intervention include:
- C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS)
- University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR)
- University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS)
- Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SD-UBIDS)
Each institution is expected to receive GH¢10 million to expand infrastructure, improve learning conditions, and enhance research capabilities.
🏗️ Why the Funding Matters
Hon. Haruna Iddrisu underscored that this targeted investment will empower these relatively young universities to meet the rising demand for tertiary education and ensure equity across all regions.
“This government is fully committed to nurturing our young public universities, ensuring they have the necessary resources to develop and provide quality education that meets the demands of our evolving economy,” the Minister stated.
He emphasized that the funding aligns with Ghana’s national agenda to bridge regional inequalities in education and enhance access to STEM, health sciences, and business innovation.
🔎 Context and Vision
This development comes on the heels of several educational reforms and investments under the Ministry, including the GALOP AF 2 programme and TVET innovation projects.
The GETFund seed money is also seen as a major confidence boost for the leadership of these universities, enabling them to plan long-term academic programmes and upgrade essential facilities such as:
- Science and ICT laboratories
- Health simulation centres
- Libraries and digital resource hubs
- Affordable student hostels
