The Ghana Education Service (GES) has suspended the implementation of the new PTA Guidelines and the collection of related levies in all Senior High and Senior High Technical Schools, pending further notice.

GES Halts PTA Levy Collection Across Schools

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a new directive suspending the implementation of the recently introduced Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) Guidelines. The decision, effective immediately, stops all Senior High and Senior High Technical Schools from collecting PTA levies from parents and guardians until further instructions are provided.

According to GES Management, the suspension aims to allow for further consultations and reviews to ensure clarity and fairness in the process. The directive was circulated to all Regional and District Directors of Education, instructing them to communicate the order to school heads and ensure strict compliance.

Directive to Regional and District Directors

The GES emphasised that the directive is urgent and mandatory. Regional and District Directors are required to monitor and ensure that no school under their jurisdiction collects any levy or applies the new PTA Guidelines while the suspension remains in force.

The Service warned that any breach of the directive would attract administrative consequences. This reinforces the GES’s effort to maintain transparency, accountability, and uniformity in how parent contributions are managed within the education system.

Background to the Suspension

The new PTA Guidelines were earlier introduced to streamline the activities of Parent-Teacher Associations across Senior High Schools in Ghana. The guidelines included provisions on how levies were to be proposed, approved, and collected. However, the policy has drawn mixed reactions from various education stakeholders, with some calling for broader consultation before implementation.

The GES, responding to these concerns, decided to place the policy on hold while engaging key actors, including school heads, PTAs, and educational unions, to refine the document.

What Happens Next

Until new directions are issued, no PTA-related fees are to be requested or collected in any public Senior High or Senior High Technical School. GES has assured parents and guardians that updated information will be provided once consultations conclude and a final decision is made.

This move is part of a broader effort by the Ghana Education Service to maintain order and transparency in school management practices, ensuring that all financial contributions from parents are justified, accountable, and consistent with national education policies.
