The Ghana Education Service has aligned the 2025–2026 Second Term academic calendar with clear weekly lesson planning dates for basic school teachers nationwide. Here are the official week-ending Fridays and what teachers should note.

Teaching Resumes Nationwide After Christmas Break

Basic schools across Ghana will resume Second Term academic activities in early January 2026 following the Christmas vacation, in line with the Ghana Education Service academic calendar. For teachers, particularly at the kindergarten, primary, and junior high school levels, lesson planning is expected to follow clearly defined instructional weeks.

The weekly structure below provides the official week-ending Fridays to guide lesson notes, schemes of work, supervision, and monitoring activities throughout the Second Term.

What the Calendar Means for Teachers

Under GES guidelines, each instructional week runs from Monday to Friday, with lesson notes prepared ahead of classroom delivery. The dates above serve as reference points for:

  • Weekly lesson notes submission
  • Scheme of work coverage tracking
  • Headteacher and circuit supervisor inspections
  • Continuous assessment planning
  • End-of-term consolidation and revision

The 13th week, ending on 3 April 2026, is expected to coincide with final instructional activities, revisions, and preparation for end-of-term assessments before vacation.

Importance for Basic School Teachers

For basic school teachers, especially those preparing lesson plans for Second Term, aligning strictly with the GES calendar remains critical. Deviations may affect supervision reports, appraisal outcomes, and compliance with district-level monitoring.

Teachers are also advised to take note of any public holidays within the term and make appropriate instructional adjustments without compromising curriculum coverage.

District Variations and Local Directives

While the national calendar provides the framework, teachers are encouraged to confirm any district or municipal-specific directives, including mock examinations, in-service training, or mid-term assessments that may slightly affect instructional timelines.

Official Guidance

The Ghana Education Service continues to emphasise structured planning, accountability, and consistency across schools nationwide. Teachers are urged to keep copies of approved calendars and align all academic records accordingly.
