EducationGhana| July 11| FREE SHS CRISIS: Wesley Girls and Mfantsipim SHS Students charged GHC500 and GHC250 each for Feeding:

Parents of students of the Wesley Girls Senior High School in the Central Region are being charged an amount of GH¢500 to support the feeding of their children in the midst of the ongoing food crisis that is hindering the effective implementation of the Free SHS Programme.

A Joy News Report has further confirmed that parents of students of the Mfantsipim Schoo, also in the Central Region are being charged GH¢250 for the same purpose.

According to reports gathered by EducationGhana, the decision to charge the students was arrived at by the Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) of the abovementioned schools to prevent the closure of schools over the government’s inability to provide the schools with foods suppliers for the semester.

Background

Heads of public senior high schools in the Upper West Region have resolved that if nothing is done to address food shortages in the schools by Friday, July 15, 2022, they “will be compelled to tell parents and guardians to either feed their wards or come for them since it will be impossible to continue feeding them with nothing”.

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), the association of public secondary schools in the region, said they arrived at this resolution after a meeting that “thoroughly” discussed “the food and money situation in the schools”.

They have also asked that extra-curricular activities such as sports and cultural festivities should be suspended because of the lack of funding.

These and other concerns raised by the Upper West CHASS are contained in a letter to the regional director of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
